The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, in Druid Hill Park, which is in the n.w. section of the city at jct. Druid Park Lake Dr. and Gwynns Falls Pkwy., is comprised of 135 acres with nearly 200 species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles. A highlight is Penguin Coast, home to the zoo's colony of more than 80 African penguins. Walk through the African Journey section, which includes a pride of lions, a troop of chimpanzees, a herd of elephants and the African Watering Hole with an ostrich, a white rhinoceros and zebras.

The 8-acre children's zoo features interactive exhibits, river otters, hellbenders, a giant tree slide and a petting farm. The Polar Bear Watch is a state-of-the-art exhibit enabling observation of the zoo's polar bear as she swims and plays underwater; the area also includes ravens and a bald eagle. The giraffe feeding station provides an opportunity to get up close with the herd. Keeper Encounters at various times of the day allow visitors to learn about animal habits and habitats.

Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
