Maine State Museum, in the Cultural Building in the State House Complex, contains exhibits depicting Maine's natural environment, prehistory and social history. Back to Nature features natural history scenes and a display of gems and minerals found in Maine, while 12,000 Years in Maine presents an extensive view of the state's prehistoric cultures with stone tools, weapons and clay pottery on display.

Made In Maine is the museum's exhibit of 19th-century manufacturing technologies and products and features a three-story water-powered woodworking mill.
