Kelsey Museum of Archaeology is at 434 S. State St. on the University of Michigan's central campus. The collection includes more than 100,000 pieces; displays feature pottery, glass vessels, sculptures, jewelry and other artifacts from university excavations in the Mediterranean. Greek, Roman and Egyptian artifacts depict daily life in these ancient civilizations.
Highlights include a child mummy, Egyptian mummy masks, an elaborately painted mummy case and a large watercolor reproduction of frescoes from the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii, Italy. Other notable items are Latin inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, ancient coins, and Byzantine and Islamic textiles. Three special exhibits are presented each year.
Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
