Detroit Public Library is at 5201 Woodward Ave. at Kirby Ave. The Italian Renaissance main library building features white Vermont marble. Murals by Edwin H. Blashfield and Gari Melchers, painted-glass windows designed by Frederick J. Wiley, mosaic panels depicting Shakespeare’s “Seven Ages of Man” and Pewabic tiles adorn the interior.

The Burton Historical Collection and the Rare Book Room are of interest. The Hackley Collection focuses on African Americans’ contribution to the performing arts and includes rare books, manuscripts, photographs and recorded sounds. The Coleman A. Young Mayoral Papers collection contains correspondence and government papers from Young's four terms as mayor of Detroit. The Skillman branch library (121 Gratiot Ave.) houses the National Automotive History Collection.
