Elmwood Historic Cemetery
AAA Editor Notes
Elmwood Historic Cemetery, 1200 Elmwood Ave., was established in 1846 and is the city’s oldest continuously operating nondenominational cemetery. A creek on the grounds is now a serene feature but was the site of a battle between Chief Pontiac and the British during the French and Indian War.
The 86-acre parklike setting includes many tombs, grave markers and mausoleums that date to the mid- to late 1800s and are Victorian in style. Lewis Cass, the powerful 19th-century Michigan politician, and Martha Jean “The Queen” Steinberg, believed to be the first African American woman to own a radio station, are two of the prominent individuals buried here.
Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 15 minutes minimum.
