Dalles of the St. Croix River

Dalles of the St. Croix River is within Interstate State Park and the Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway. Trails lead to the top of unusual rock formations that form the rugged St. Croix River Gorge on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, where the river reaches a depth of 100 feet. Lava cliffs, eroded by the river during glacial activity, rise sharply—in some places up to 200 feet. Atop the cliffs are cylindrical-shaped potholes up to 6 feet across, created by the accumulated effect of thousands of years of swirling currents.
