Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge is 2.5 mi. s. on US 159, s. from I-29 exit 79. More than 300 species of birds—including up to half a million waterfowl during migrations—inhabit the 7,415-acre refuge on the eastern edge of the Missouri River flood plain. About 300-400 bald eagles migrate to the refuge in late November and mid-December. The refuge has hiking trails, observation towers, wayside exhibits and a 10-mile auto tour route. Information leaflets are available at the office headquarters and at trail kiosks.
