Mississippi Armed Forces Museum is off US 49, 4.2 mi. s. of jct. US 98, then 1.5 mi. e. on South Gate Rd. to Bldg. 850. Exhibits chronicle America's participation in major wars and other historically significant conflicts. Located at Camp Shelby, one of the largest National Guard training sites in the country, the museum features more than 17,000 pieces of military memorabilia, including uniforms, vehicles and weapons. Interactive exhibits in themed galleries focus on advances in technology and weaponry, solider training at Camp Shelby and the U.S. military's role in such operations as disaster relief and the war on terrorism.

The Trench Experience employs effects and lighting to acquaint visitors with the sights, smells and sounds of trench warfare, which took place primarily during World War I. The World War II gallery charts the evolution of Camp Shelby, founded in 1917, and the development of the nuclear weapon.

The site's archives and library contain some 6,500 materials imparting U.S. military history, including documents about World War II German prisoner-of-war camps in Mississippi.

A display on the museum courtyard's tower highlights Mississippians who have been awarded the Medal of Honor and an indoor exhibit presents the names of state natives who have received the Purple Heart.

Note: All adult visitors may be asked to show a photo ID in order to gain admittance to Camp Shelby.
