Beartooth Scenic Highway is US 212 from Red Lodge to the northeastern entrance of Yellowstone National Park via Cooke City. The Native Americans called the original Beartooth Pass the “trail above the eagles.” This 64-mile road begins at 5,650 feet and rises to the Beartooth Plateau via a series of switchbacks.

After cresting the plateau at an elevation of almost 11,000 feet, where an unobstructed view of more than 75 miles is possible, the road winds past snowfields, small lakes and fields of flowers. Finally it descends into a dense pine forest, passing tumbling waterfalls and streams interspersed with occasional jagged peaks.

Many scenic overlooks have been constructed. Even in mid-summer, cool temperatures can be expected at higher elevations; a jacket or sweater is recommended.

Time: Allow 3 hours minimum.
