Historic Latta Plantation, within Latta Nature Center and Preserve at 5225 Sample Rd., is the circa 1800 cotton plantation and home of James Latta, a prominent businessman in the community, and his wife Jane. Once covering 750 acres, the property is nestled on a peninsula along the Catawba River. The two-story Federal-style house is furnished in period; architectural highlights include a finely detailed staircase and elaborate mantels. Outbuildings include the kitchen, a smokehouse, provisions barn, corn crib, feed barn, animal barn, yeoman's cabin, re-created housing for enslaved workers and the 18th-century Alexander Cabin.

Special programs for children are available. The house is open only by guided tour.
