Earl Scruggs Center, 103 S. Lafayette St. in the Historic County Courthouse, tells the story of five-string banjo master Earl Scruggs and the area where he was born and raised. Known among banjo players as the innovator of the three-finger picking style (called “Scruggs style”), his legacy includes such favorite tunes as “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and “The Ballad of Jed Clampett,” written for the TV show “The Beverly Hillbillies.”

Interactive displays and audio kiosks present archived radio programs, TV footage and interviews featuring Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and other regional musicians. Visitors can experiment with making their own music on a virtual mandolin, Dobro or banjo at the Common Threads interactive table. A life-size sculpture of Scruggs features his own clothing covered in resin.

Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
