AAA Editor Notes
The General Crook House Museum is at 30th and Fort sts. at Fort Omaha on the Metropolitan Community College campus. This 1879 house served as the Fort Omaha residence of Gen. George Crook, commander of the Department of the Platte—which included Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, Wyoming and parts of Idaho and Montana—during the 1870s Indian Wars. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes were guests at the two-story Italianate house, which contains antiques, artifacts and military exhibits.

Among the exhibits is an interpretation of the landmark 1879 trial of Ponca Chief Standing Bear versus Crook. The trial was the first time an Indian was recognized as a person with rights in the eyes of the law. Visitors also can see the servants quarters and Victorian heirloom gardens.

Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
