Nevada State Museum, Carson City is at 600 N. Carson St. The Dema Guinn Concourse is the gateway to a newly renovated and expanded facility that occupies the former Carson City Mint Building, where silver coins were minted 1870-93. Visitors will find an exceptional variety of artifacts from different time periods organized around various themes.
Nevada's Changing Earth chronicles the state's geologic history over millions of years, telling the story with original illustrations, rock specimens, field photographs and a walk-through representation of a Devonian-era sea. Among the stirring depictions of ancient life is a Columbian mammoth, excavated from Nevada's Black Rock Desert, fighting for survival in a small, mud-encrusted water hole.
Under One Sky focuses on Native Americans and their struggle to wrest an existence from a harsh land. A reconstruction of a Great Basin cave offers evidence of past human cultures. Visitors also can walk through a timeline of Nevada history, tour a reproduction of an underground mine and discover seldom-seen Nevada wildlife like the Great Basin rattlesnake and the Lahontan cutthroat trout.
Reminders of the museum building's original function are the Coin Press No. 1—a 6-ton, steam-powered piece of machinery that struck the first coin to bear the CC mintmark—and a complete set of Carson City Morgan dollars.
