Fort Churchill State Historic Park is 8 mi. s. on US 95A, then 1 mi. w. on Old Fort Churchill Rd. Established in 1860 as protection against Native American attacks, this U.S. Army outpost also guarded the Pony Express and other mail routes. Although the fort is now in ruins, the site, a 3,200-acre state park, offers an interpretive trail and a visitor center with exhibits relating the outpost's colorful history.
