AAA Editor Notes
Moffatt-Ladd House is at 154 Market St. on the Portsmouth Harbour Trail. Best known as the home of William Whipple, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the house was built in 1763 by Whipple's father-in-law, John Moffatt, a wealthy sea merchant. Paneled halls and chambers, an ornate staircase and original furniture distinguish the house, which is set amid formal gardens with turf steps and raised beds.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
