Ghost Ranch is 12 mi. n.w. on US 84; watch for the signed turnoff. Georgia O'Keeffe owned a summerhouse and painted familiar scenes at this 21,000-acre former ranch, now a Presbyterian education and retreat center. In addition to the spectacular climb to Chimney Rock, hikers can tackle Box Canyon (a 4-mile round trip that reaches elevations of 6,900 feet) and the more difficult Kitchen Mesa trail, a 5-mile trek that takes several hours to complete.
Also at the site are a meditation labyrinth, a Zen garden, a medicine wheel and two museums. O'Keeffe Landscape Trail Rides are offered year-round; reservations are required. Georgia O'Keeffe at Ghost Ranch Landscape Tours are given mid-March through Thanksgiving weekend.
Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
