Museum of the Moving Image, 35th Ave. and 37th St. at 36-01 35th Ave. in Astoria, chronicles the art, history, technique and technology of motion pictures, television and digital media. The museum occupies a renovated building on the campus of the historic Kaufman Astoria Studios, originally a 1920s facility used by Paramount Pictures. The museum's core exhibit, Behind the Screen, illuminates the moving image with more than a thousand film and television artifacts, including costumes, cameras and props; computer-based interactive experiences; commissioned installations; audiovisual materials; and demonstrations of equipment and techniques.

Visitors can try their hand at adding sound effects, creating animation and recording dialogue; they also can see how live television is edited in a control room. The Jim Henson Exhibit details the life of the puppeteer and filmmaker best known as the inventor of the Muppets. Also on site are two theaters, an education center and an outdoor courtyard.

Note: Strollers, umbrellas, backpacks and large bags are not permitted. Under 14 must be with an adult age 18+.
