Schilling

A long communal table fills the center of this extremely cozy, small restaurant, with garage door windows that open up to the street on warm days. The gentle mood and décor works well for either a casual business meal during daytime or a romantic date in the evening. The creative menu hits on Austrian and Mediterranean comfort foods like a stellar Wiener Schnitzel, fresh pastas, burrata, spätzle with bacon, Gruyere with spring onions and some delicious traditional desserts. Near to the 9/11 Memorial, the side street on which the restaurant is located can be a little hard to find, but that is a part of Schilling's charm. There is a wide range of cocktails and happy hour which might be one of the reasons for some to come here after a long day of toiling at the many nearby financial firms on Wall Street. It is likely to be no mere coincidence that Schilling takes it's name from the old Austrian monetary currency, prior to the euro, which had been used in that country during the 20th Century. There is a nice selection of Austrian wines on offer, too.
