Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site, 6 mi. e. on SR 69, is marked by a granite shaft. On Aug. 6, 1777, in the “bloodiest battle of the Revolution,” Mohawk Valley militiamen en route to relieve Fort Stanwix were ambushed by a large force of Tories and Indians. The Colonists and Oneida Indian allies led by Gen. Nicholas Herkimer were victorious, though badly mauled, in the 6-hour battle.
Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted.
