Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park is off Hwy. 102 exit 9 from Halifax and exit 11 from Truro, then take Hwy. 2 to 149 Creighton Rd. The park is situated on 40 hectares (99 acres) of natural woodland featuring ponds and marshes. It is home to more than 60 species of mammals and birds on display in natural enclosures. The park’s animals are native to Nova Scotia or Canada, with a few exotics. These animals cannot be released into the wild as they are either orphaned, permanently injured or were raised in captivity. Hundreds of waterfowl visit the park’s wetlands to nest and rest while migrating.

The Wildlife Station offers a more in-depth look at native birds and local habitat and includes a working beehive. The Wetland Centre features displays, activities and live wetland creatures such as invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles. A 10-hectare (25-acre) picnic area with sheltered tables, restrooms and a large playground is on the premises, as well as two wetland hiking trails. The wide walkways through the park are easily accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Educational programs are available by reservation.

Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
