Point Pleasant Park is at the s. end of the city on Point Pleasant Dr. Commanding a view of the harbor and the Northwest Arm, Point Pleasant contains batteries and forts that served as part of Halifax's defense network until the end of World War II. The 74-hectare (183-acre) park features nature trails and walks, a supervised beach and performances of family matinées as well as the annual Shakespeare by the Sea season.
The park also boasts the Prince of Wales Tower National Historic Site. The tower was built in 1796 under the direction of the Duke of Kent, father of Queen Victoria. The round stone structure, almost three times as wide as it is high, was the prototype of a new system of coastal defense intended to fend off possible attacks by Napoleon Bonaparte's forces. The tower served as part of Halifax's coastal defense network. Interpretive signs depict the tower's history.
Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the park grounds. Off-leash areas for pets are available.
Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Picnicking is permitted.
