Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, 610 Spring Meadows Rd., is in the Mojave Desert. A highlight is Kings Pool, which is home to pupfish, an ancient species of fish. Three boardwalks—all less than a mile round-trip—lead to different areas of the desert and feature interpretive signs to provide insight into the environment. The visitor center includes exhibits and shows screenings of a film about this desert area.

Spring and fall offer the most moderate temperatures and the best chances for viewing wildlife.

Note: Since the refuge is accessible via dirt roads, visitors should phone ahead to inquire about road conditions after rainy weather.

Picnicking is permitted.
