Grand Central Terminal/Jones Lang LaSalle
AAA Editor Notes
Grand Central Terminal, 42nd St. between Lexington and Vanderbilt aves., is the city entrance through which half a million commuters pass every day. The 1913 Beaux Arts terminal, often—and mistakenly—referred to as Grand Central Station, serves the MTA Metro-North Railroad and has a subway stop connecting it to city destinations.

The terminal fell on hard times with a decline in rail travel in the 1960s and the city's financial crisis in the 1970s. A dramatic restoration project in the 1990s returned the terminal to its former glory, particularly the 120-foot-high ceiling in the cavernous main concourse, a painted skyscape ablaze with constellations. Shops, restaurants and gourmet fresh food markets are on the premises.

Grand Central Tours, in conjunction with the Municipal Arts Society, offers daily 75-minute public tours during which docents share inside knowledge and discuss the terminal’s design, history and operations. Self-guiding audio tours are available in English, Chinese, French, Spanish, Japanese, Italian and German.

Guided tours are available. Food is available.
