AAA Editor Notes
Riverside Church is at 490 Riverside Dr. between 120th and 122nd sts. The design of this Gothic-style church was inspired by a 13th-century cathedral in Chartres, France. The cornerstone was laid in 1927 and the congregation held its first service in 1930. A 392-foot-high tower with an open-air observation platform houses the 74-bronze-bell carillon donated by John D. Rockefeller Jr.; it's said to be the heaviest and second-largest carillon in the world. Stained-glass windows and several religious paintings and tapestries adorn the interior of the sanctuary. The church's Riverside Theater also presents theatrical performances in dance, music and drama each year; recent shows have included “Twelfth Night” and “The Nutcracker.”

Note: The bell tower is closed to the public due to safety issues.
