AAA Editor Notes
William Holmes McGuffey Museum, on the Miami University campus at 410 E. Spring St., is the former home of William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873), who established his first reading audience while a professor here in the 1830s. He and his brother Alexander Hamilton McGuffey compiled six editions of the “McGuffey Eclectic Reader,” a collection of stories and excerpts from literary works that taught morals and values. After the Civil War their use became prominent in American schools. The museum contains a variety of antiques related to McGuffey and his family, including his work table and a lectern.
