Canadian War Museum, 1 Vimy Pl. on LeBreton Flats, is in a dramatic concrete and glass, bunker-style building; the grass on the roof suggests regeneration, a necessary result of war.

The permanent exhibit, organized chronologically into four galleries, relates Canada's military history as it affected the lives of ordinary citizens, in actual combat, on the home front or in peace; a fifth gallery explores Canada's long history of commemoration. Personal stories and recollections are integrated with artifacts as warfare is traced from the days of the First Peoples, through the South African and First and Second World Wars, to the Cold War and the present day. The gallery also includes Canadian involvement in operations in Afghanistan, the Gulf, Kosovo, Rwanda and Somalia.

In addition to the more than 14,000 pieces of the Beaverbrook Collection of War Art, The LeBreton Gallery houses military vehicles and artillery, ranging from cannons to tanks, as well as a Voodoo fighter jet.

Note: Street and underground parking is available (no RVs or large vehicles). Bus services running near the museum are available from downtown; tickets are timed with a 1 hour arrival window and are required for all ages.

Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 3 hours minimum.
