AAA Editor Notes
Government House (Rideau Hall), 1 Sussex Dr. at the entrance to Rockcliffe Park, has been the official home and workplace of Canada's governors-general since 1867. The original residence was built in 1838 by Thomas MacKay, a Scottish stonemason who worked on the Rideau Canal; it was called Rideau Hall—a name still used unofficially. The state rooms, adorned with Canadian art and furnishings, contain an exhibit about the awarding of Canadian honors and the Visitor Centre near the entrance gate has exhibits detailing the role of the Governor General and history of the building.

Government House is on 32 landscaped hectares (79 acres), and a self-guided tour brochure for the grounds is available at the entrance. The Ceremonial Guard performs the Relief of the Sentries.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted.
