AAA Editor Notes
Diefenbunker, Canada's Cold War Museum National Historic Site is in the village of Carp off Hwy. 417 exit 144, then 13 km (8 mi.) n. to 3929 Carp Rd. Nicknamed for Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, the four-story, 300-room bunker was built 1959-61 to house Canadian government and military officials in the event of a nuclear crisis. Visitors can see a Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) radio studio, a Bank of Canada gold-storage vault, the prime minister's suite, living quarters and cooking and dining areas. Archival photographs detail the construction of the 100,000-square-foot shelter, which was built entirely in secret.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
