McKenzie Pass Scenic Highway (SR 242) traverses between Belknap Springs and Sisters. The road snakes across 5,324-foot McKenzie Pass. Excellent views of the Three Sisters, Mount Washington, Mount Jefferson and other volcanic formations can be seen from Dee Wright Observatory, at the summit.
Lava fields at the summit constitute one of the larger, more recent flows in the country. The .5-mile, marked Lava River National Recreation Trail explains the geological phenomena of the area.
The highway is not suitable for trailers. Phone ahead before beginning your trip as weather and snow conditions at high elevations may be different from those found on the valley floor.
