Senator John Heinz History Center, 1212 Smallman St., is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and is the state's largest history museum. It features six floors of permanent and changing exhibits devoted to the history and heritage of western Pennsylvania; a library and archives; and the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, chronicling the region's professional and amateur sports figures. A long-term exhibit, From Slavery to Freedom, covers 250 years of African American history from slavery to activism.

View a large collection of artifacts from the set of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood." The Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation exhibition celebrates 250 years of Pittsburgh inventors and innovations that have changed the world, including the first liver transplant, the Polio vaccine, the nation's first radio station and the Ferris wheel. A large collection of glass along with interactive exhibits recall the days when Pittsburgh was known as America's Glass City. The Heinz exhibit chronicles the history of Pittsburgh's H. J. Heinz Co. Interactive exhibits and games in Discovery Place help children understand how people in different times lived, worked and played.
