The Avenue of 444 Flags

The Avenue of 444 Flags is in Hillcrest Memorial Park at 2619 E. State St. A paved avenue is lined with 444 American flags, one for each day that 53 American hostages were held captive in Iran under the reign of the Ayatollah Khomeini. The flags fly 24 hours a day as a symbol of hope and freedom. A monument and eternal flame are dedicated to the eight U.S. servicemen who died trying to rescue the hostages in April 1980. Veterans of other wars also are honored.
