Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, 532 N. 7th St. at jct. Spring Garden St., contains a visitor center that has exhibits, an audiovisual program and a reading room as well as the house where Poe lived 1843-44 with his wife, Virginia; mother-in-law, Maria Clemm; and their cat, Catterina. Poe lived in Philadelphia, a thriving publishing center, for six years. During these years he wrote some of his most famous works, including “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Black Cat,” “The Gold-Bug” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Poe rented several residences during his years here, but this is the only one that remains.
