AAA Editor Notes
Rhode Island State House, 82 Smith St. between Francis and Gaspee sts., has been the meeting place for the Rhode Island General Assembly since Jan. 1, 1901. The Charter Museum, located in room 143, features the original parchment Royal Charter of 1663, granted by King Charles II. There also are relics and noteworthy paintings, including a full-length portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart. A large marble dome—said to be the fourth largest unsupported dome in the world—caps the building. A gilded bronze statue, “Independent Man,” stands atop the dome.
