Joseph Manigault House

Joseph Manigault House, 350 Meeting St., was designed by Gabriel Manigault for his brother Joseph, a wealthy rice planter, and built in 1803. A notable house of the Federal style, it has fine examples of furniture made in Charleston, England and France. Some of the rooms have been restored and showcase original color schemes. A grand staircase leads to the second floor and a hidden stairway connects the second and third floors.
Visitors can tour the gardens on their own. Interpretive signs designate the location of such outbuildings as slave quarters and the stable that no longer exist. Each December, the Garden Club of Charleston decorates the house with plant varieties that would have been found in the area in the early 1800s.
Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
