Karpeles Manuscript Museum, 68 Spring St., is housed in the large 1856 St. James Methodist Church, which was built in the Greek Revival style and modeled after the Temple of Jupiter in Rome. The building once served as a Confederate hospital and medical storehouse during the Civil War before the Union army attacked the city.

Displays of original historic documents representative of a variety of disciplines, including art, politics, religion and science, change every four months. Translations are provided for non-English works. There also is a permanent photography exhibit about the construction of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.

Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
