AAA Editor Notes
Middleton Place is on SR 61, 14 mi. n.w. of jct. US 17 at 4300 Ashley River Rd. The oldest landscaped gardens in America were begun in 1741 by Henry Middleton, later president of the First Continental Congress. The family's stewardship over Middleton Place has lasted nearly 300 years. Azaleas bloom in the spring, magnolias and roses in the early summer, crape myrtles and perennials through the summer and fall, and camellias during the winter.

Demonstrations of spinning, weaving, blacksmithing, pottery, corn grinding and cow milking are given in the Plantation Stableyards where interpreters practice the trades skilled enslaved people would have performed in the 18th- and 19th centuries. African American life is interpreted on the Beyond the Fields Walking Tour, which visits a freedman's cabin, chapel and cemetery, among other stops throughout the plantation. A horse-drawn carriage tour and house tour are available for additional fees.

Guided tours are available. Food is available.
