Washington Square, or City Hall Park, at 147 King St. at jct. Meeting St., includes several monuments honoring prominent South Carolinians. Among these are memorials to Henry Timrod, a noted South Carolina poet; Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard, leader of the city's defense during the Civil War; and the Washington Light Infantry. Also on the square is the Fireproof Building, the nation's first fireproof structure, designed by Robert Mills.
