AAA Editor Notes
The Mammoth Site is 1 mi. s.w. on the US 18 bypass. Approximately 26,000 years old, the site has one of the largest concentrations of Columbian mammoth bones discovered to date. Believed to have been a sinkhole fed by springs, it is the only in-situ (left-as-found) site for mammoth bones in America. Mammoths, giant short-faced bears and other animals entered the pond, became trapped as a result of the slippery, steep banks and died of starvation.

Guides explain the site's history and findings; visitors can view current excavations. In July teams of volunteers can be seen digging for bones. The site museum and visitor center have paleontology exhibits. Two theaters present an introductory video.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
