Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is off I-90 exit 8 to McGuigan Rd., 3 mi. s. on McGuigan Rd., then .2 mi. e. to 500 N. Tinton Rd. Founded in 1999 to provide a home for exploited and neglected animals, the 350-acre sanctuary provides 2-hour guided tours allowing visitors to observe more than 300 animals, including bears, lions, llamas, pigs and tigers as well as cats and dogs, in their natural habitat. Guides impart the animals' history, how they came to reside at the sanctuary, their societal roles and the factors contributing to a species being classified as endangered or threatened. Hercules, a Barbary lion—one of the more scarce lion breeds—is among the site's featured animals.
