Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is 6 mi. s.e. on FM 2040. At more than 115,000 acres, this refuge encompasses coastal wetlands and prairies, shoreline and a Gulf Coast barrier island. Inhabitants of the refuge include alligators, armadillos, white-tailed deer, raccoons and javelinas. Among the more than 400 species of birds are roseate spoonbill, crested caracara, sora, a variety of ducks and endangered whooping cranes. The best viewing times year-round are early morning and late afternoon/evening; whooping cranes are best viewed from late October to early April.
The refuge includes a 40-foot observation tower, several miles of walking trails and a self-guiding, 16-mile auto tour; registration at the center is required.
Picnicking is permitted.
