Rothko Chapel is at 3900 Yupon St. at jct. Sul Ross St. Dominique and John de Menil commissioned American abstract expressionist Mark Rothko and architects Philip Johnson, Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubrey to design this octagonal sanctuary, which contains 14 monumental Rothko murals. The chapel is a contemplative interfaith, sacred art space open to individuals of all faiths. The adjoining plaza features a reflecting pool and Barnett Newman’s sculpture, "Broken Obelisk," which is dedicated to the memory of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and represents the chapel’s dual mission to cultivate contemplation and inspire action for social justice.
