San Antonio Zoo is at 3903 N. St. Mary's St. in Brackenridge Park. Quarried limestone cliffs provide natural habitats for some 750 animal species. The more than 50-acre zoo is noteworthy for its endangered animals, including tigers, rhinos and Komodo dragons.
Enter the zoo through The Grottos and say hello to the hyenas and spectacled and black bear families. Africa Live! is home to a Nile crocodile, a variety of fish, okapi, African wild dogs, dwarf mongoose, colobus monkeys, and a giant aviary as well as a water hole where the hippos, Timothy and Uma, reside. Head next door to The Savanna where visitors can feed giraffes. Lions are the big draw for Big Cat Valley, while smaller cats such as the clouded leopard can be seen in the Cat Grottos. Neotropica is a remote South American fishing village and home to jaguars, birds from the Amazon, monkeys, fish and reptiles. Australian wildlife from the outback and beyond, including cassowaries, tree kangaroos, red kangaroos and the Australian Aviary can all be found in Wild Australia; don't forget to fed the kangaroo at Kangaroo Krossing.
Other zoo highlights include the Reptile House; the Hixon Bird House; Amphibia; the 1948 Friedrich Aquarium; and Kronkosky's Tiny Tot Nature Spot, where young explorers can dig, climb and splash while discovering nature's wonders, including the Butterfly House. The Project Selva 4D Theater presents a changing schedule of movies that spill out of the screen over the audience with such sensory special effects as bubbles, snow, scents, water mist, seat vibrations and wind. The San Antonio Zoo Train, once the longest miniature railroads in the world, offers daily trips through Brackenridge Park with stops at various locations, including the restored 1920s historic Kiddie Park . Behind the Scenes guided tours and feedings also are offered.
