Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary

Winston Nanan Caroni Bird Sanctuary is 7 mi. (11 km) s. on the Uriah Butler Hwy. in Caroni. This 15,000-acre (6,000-hectare) mangrove swamp is the protected nesting ground to the scarlet ibis, now threatened by pollution and poachers. At sunset, thousands of the brilliantly colored birds return to roost in the mangrove trees, offering a spectacular sight. Guided 2.5-hour boat trips are offered by several specialist tour operators, including Nanan's Caroni Bird Sanctuary Tours.

Insect repellent and binoculars are advised; boats do not disturb the birds by approaching closely.
