The museum features changing exhibits that draw from a collection of more than 17,000 works of art, including Byzantine and medieval art, antiquities, Pacific and African tribal arts, 16th-century to present-day European paintings, and surrealistic and contemporary works by such artists as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol.

The Cy Twombly Gallery contains work by the American artist. Other highlights include the nearby Rothko Chapel, with huge canvases by the abstract expressionist, and the Barnett Newman sculpture “Broken Obelisk,” dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr. Richmond Hall displays fluorescent work by the minimalist sculptor Dan Flavin.
