San Fernando Cathedral is at 115 W. Main Plaza. Colonists sent by King Philip of Spain arrived in San Antonio in 1731 and began work on the cathedral, the oldest parish in Texas. A French Gothic addition was completed in 1852; a modern restoration, which includes three gold-leaf retablos (altar pieces) in the colonial section, has been completed. A marble coffin, located in the south entry, is said to hold the remains of defenders of the Alamo. “San Antonio–The Saga,” a video art installation projected on the façade of the cathedral, tells the story of the city from its beginnings to today.
