Natural Bridge
AAA Editor Notes
Natural Bridge State Park is off I-81 exit 175 or 180 on US 11 or off the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Mileposts 61.6 and 63.7. The 215-foot tall limestone arch spanning Cedar Creek, known by the Monacan Indians as the “Bridge of God,” is an ancient natural wonder, a Virginia Civil War Trails site and a Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail site. It was purchased in 1774 by Thomas Jefferson, and surveyed by George Washington.

In early American history the Natural Bridge ranked with Niagara Falls in the top tier of the country's natural wonders and continues to inspire awe today. Those exploring the serene Cedar Creek Trail view tall rock walls, lush vegetation and a beautiful creek. A re-created Monacan Indian village allows visitors to delve into the history of Virginia's native peoples. When darkness falls, the Natural Bridge comes alive with choreographed lighting, words and music during “The Drama of Creation,” a bridge tradition since 1927.

Picnicking is permitted.
