AAA Editor Notes
The American Civil War Museum—Appomattox is at 159 Horseshoe Rd. This state-of-the-art facility, an extension of The American Civil War Museum in Richmond, offers two permanent exhibitions showcasing Civil War artifacts. The frock coat and sword Gen. Robert E. Lee wore when he surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865, are among the many uniforms and weapons included in the museum's impressive collection. Hands-on displays also help chronicle the 4-year conflict, as do the photos, letters and diaries of individuals from varying walks of life who were affected by the war.

Galleries relate the Civil War's aftermath in the defeated South and the Reconstruction period and how emancipation affected Black Virginians. Temporary exhibitions also are offered.

Time: Allow 45 minutes minimum.
