Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop

Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, at Caroline and Amelia sts., interprets Colonial medical practices in a restored 18th-century building. Living-history presentations and demonstrations with costumed guides discuss once-popular treatments for conditions like “female hysteria” and highlight a variety of medicinal and surgical supplies—from leeches to lancets. A physic garden of medicinal herbs adjoins the building where Dr. Hugh Mercer worked prior to joining the Continental Army as a brigadier general in 1776.
