AAA Editor Notes
Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is off I-85 exit 63A at 6125 Boydton Plank Rd. A premier Civil War history destination, this 424-acre park features four antebellum homes, four museums and daily living-history demonstrations. The park also is the site of the Breakthrough Battle of April 2, 1865, a decisive point in the Petersburg Campaign that led to Gen. Robert E. Lee’s retreat from Richmond.

Appealing to casual visitors, serious students of Civil War history and families, the park explores the experiences of common soldiers and life in the antebellum South, including slavery. The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier displays more than 3,000 artifacts, supplying visitors with personal audio players to follow the true-life stories of individuals who fought in the conflict.

The site includes a military encampment, slave quarters, fortifications and nearly a mile of original earthworks.

Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 3 hours minimum.
