AAA Editor Notes
Chippokes State Park is 1.5 mi. e. via SR 10, then 3 mi. n. on CR 634 to 695 Chippokes Park Rd. Capt. William Powell obtained a land grant along the Chippokes Creek in 1619. The property passed to Col. Henry Bishop, who expanded the plantation to its present 1,947 acres. It is said the Chippokes mansion, built in 1854, survived the Civil War because its owner supplied liquor to both sides.

One of the oldest working farms in the country, this estate on the James River retains a plantation atmosphere. Old mulberry trees, remnants of America’s attempt to establish a silk industry, grow throughout the park. An interpretive tour road and hiking and bicycle trails allow for exploration of the grounds. A museum contains antique farm and forestry equipment that help detail the area’s history.

Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
